Morgan, John (b. 10 JUN 1735, d. 15 OCT 1789)
Note: John Morgan studied at the Nottingham School near Philadelphia and then the College of Philadelphia, now the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in the first class, 1757. He apprenticed in medicine under Dr. John Redman, who convinced him to complete his studies abroad. He studied in London for a year and then two years at the University of Edinburgh, where he received an M.D. degree in 1763. He subsequently studied in Paris and with Giovanni Morgagni in Rome.

His thesis at Edinburgh, on the formation of pus, was very well received, as was his paper on the preparation of anatomical specimens. As a result, he was elected to several distinguished European scientific societies, including Académie Royale de Chirurgie de Paris, the belle-Lettres Society of Rome, the Royal Colleges of Physicians in both London and Edinburgh, and the Royal Society.

Along with Dr. Thomas Bond (No. 412) he was one of the founders of the medical School at the College of Philadelphia and he was appointed professor of the theory and practice of physic in 1765.

With the outbreak of the Revolution, the Continental Congress appointed him on Oct. 17 1775 director-general of hospitals and physician-in-chief of the American army. Joining the army at Cambridge, Massachusetts, he accompanied it to New York. he reorganized the medical department and greatly raised its standards. But this made him very unpopular with many subordinates and they managed to get him demoted to being in charge only of hospitals east of the Hudson River. A few months later Congress removed him entirely without explanation. Morgan fought back, publishing a pamphlet in his defense, and George Washington exonerated him of any neglect of his duties or wrong-doing and Congress declared that he "hath in the most satisfactory manner vindicated his conduct" and that as director-general he "did conduct himself ably and faithfully in the discharge of the duties of his office."

Regardless of Congress's resolution, Morgan regarded himself as disgraced and withdrew from public life, resuming his practice and continuing his professorship. He wrote often, on a variety of subjects, and was an active member of the American Philosophical Society and a founder of the Philadelphia College of Physicians.
