Verney, Ralph (b. 1420, d. AFT 11 JUN 1478)
Note: Sir Ralph Verney was a mercer in London and rose through the Mercer's Company, of which he was master four separate times, in 1459, 1464, 1471, and 1476. He held all the top offices in the City, including auditor (1453-5, 1464-5), Sheriff (1456-7), and alderman (1457-1478). He was Mayor of London in 1465-66 and served as acting Mayor in 1471 after the restoration of King Edward IV. It was he who opened the gates of the City to Edward IV and he was rewarded with a knighthood by the grateful King on May 21 1471.

Verney became a major landowner in Buckinghamshire, owning among other properties two messuages and sixty-four acres in Aylesbury and three messuages and 150 acres in Barton by 1467. He acquired shortly thereafter the manor of Claydon in that county as well, which became his seat. In 1472 he acquired the manors of Salden and Dunton. He was Justice of the Peace of Buckinghamshire from 1471 to 1475.

He represented London in the Parliaments of 1459, 1469, and 1472-75.
