Arundell, Thomas (b. ABT 1560, d. 7 NOV 1639)
Note: Sir Thomas Arundell fought "with great distinction" as a soldier of fortune in the employee of the emperor Rudolf II against the Turks. For his services he was created a count of the Holy Roman Empire. The patent of nobility specifies that all his descendants, through both male and female lines, in perpetuity, would also hold that rank.

On his return to England in 1596, Queen Elizabeth I, displeased that he had taken a foreign title without her consent, threw him into the Fleet Prison briefly and he was imprisoned again the following year. He was granted an English peerage by James I in 1605, but because he was a staunch Catholic, he frequently fell under suspicion in the reign of James I and his son Charles I, but apparently without foundation.

His daughter Anne married Charles Calvert, 1st Lord Baltimore. Anne Arundell County in Maryland is named for her.
