Manwaring, Oliver (b. 16 MAR 1633/34, d. 3 NOV 1723)
Note: Oliver Manwaring came from a noted recusant family of Lancashire, one branch of which had settled in Exeter, in Devon. His father married into a Protestant family and so the emigrant was evidently raised as a Protestant. Certainly it is hard to imagine a Catholic emigrating not only to Puritan New England, but to the area of New England, the New Haven Colony, that practiced the most severe form of Puritanism. (One settler in New Haven, returning from a long journey on a Sunday, was fined for having kissed his wife in greeting on the Sabbath.)

Oliver Manwaring moved to Norwich about 1663. He bought a house lot there on Nov 3 1664.

He left all bills and bonds due him to his grandson John Richards, "and particularly that bond which I had from my nephew Oliver Manwaring in England." That Oliver Manwaring was the son of his older brother, Esse.

Raymond, Richard (b. , d. BEF 12 MAR 1692)
Note: Richard Raymond was a mariner and first appears in the record when he was admitted as a freeman in Salem, Massachusetts, on May 14 1634. He joined the first church there before 1636.

He was granted land on Winter Island in Salem harbor, "for fishing, trade and to build upon." He later acquired sixty acres at Jefferies Creek and held other land as well. In 1660 he sold a quarter interest in "the good ketch Hopewell of Salem, of the burthen of 30 tons."

He moved to Saybrook about 1664.

In the court records of New Haven, there appears the following. "At a court in New Haven, 4 March 1660, Mr. Raymond (Richard Raymond of Salem, Mass. owner of a vessel then in New Haven harbor), being called, was told that it is commonly reported that he was drunke aboard ye ship wch ye court was sorry to hear of, and ashamed that a man standing in relation to a church as he doth should be found to stand guilty of such a fact."

Richard Raymond admitted his guilt and apologized profusely. The use of the word "Mr." would indicate that he was considered a gentleman, no small matter in the 17th century, and thus came from a good family.

Manwaring, Oliver (b. 1598/99, d. 14 MAR 1672)
Note: Oliver Manwaring was probably born in Lancashire, but moved to Devon where his uncle, Christopher Manwaring, lived. As his uncle was childless, Oliver was expected to be his heir. The latter was nominally Protestant and enjoyed numerous remunerative government posts, including Controller of the Ports of Exeter and Dartmouth and tax commissioner.

And while nominally Protestant, Christopher probably adhered to the old faith in his heart. He was certainly not pleased when his nephew and heir married into a Protestant family without his leave in 1618. In the Visitation of Devon of 1620, he makes no mention of his nephew.

But Christopher died intestate and Oliver was declared his heir regardless. He was a major benefactor of St. Anne's Hospital in Exeter that had been founded by his grandfather and great uncle.

Manwaring, Oliver (b. ABT 1558, d. 1631)
Note: Oliver Manwaring was a strong recusant and sent three of his sons to the College of the English Province of the Society of Jesus. This was where the Catholic Church trained men to operate in England to recover that country for the Faith. One son died before graduating, but the other two became noted Jesuits and were both tried for treason.

The spelling of the Devon branch of the family's name became "Manwaring" at this time, while the Lancaster branch remained "Mainwaring."
