Plantagenet, Joan (b. 29 SEP 1328, d. 7 AUG 1385)
Note: Jean Froissart, the greatest historian of the day, called Joan, "the Fair Maid of Kent," "the most beautiful and most amorous lady in the whole kingdom of her time." Certainly she led an adventurous personal life by the standards of any day.

Born the youngest child of Edmund of Woodstock, created Earl of Kent by his father, King Edward I, she was only about two when he was executed for plotting against the regency of Queen Isabella. Although the granddaughter of a king, she had few material prospects, and that would indicate that her marriage with Sir Thomas Holland was a love match. The ceremony and subsequent sexual intercourse, when Joan was only twelve, was certainly clandestine, although it established a valid marriage in the eyes of the Church.

But the following year, when Holland was off in Prussia, she was married pubicly to William Montagu, the future 2nd Earl of Salisbury, in the house of whose parents she had been raised. They lived together as man and wife until Holland successfully pressed a suit of nullity, apparently with Joan's support. In 1352, with the death without children of her last sibling, Joan became an heiress and her husband assumed the title Earl of Kent in her right.

After his death in 1360, she married Edward the Black Prince and became Princess of Wales. This match too was clandestine--and because of the close relationship (they were half first cousins once removed) required a dispensation--and was opposed by King Edward III. But once it was a fait accompli, he worked vigorously to have it regularized.

After her third husband's death, Joan exercised considerable influence for a while on her son, King Richard II. But she is said to have died of despair when he refused to forgive his half brother, John Holland, Earl of Huntingdon (see No. XXX).
